Rolling Thunder

The Elders sector [in Feng Shui] is represented by the Chinese symbol of "Chen" or Arousing Thunder. The symbolism here is that, like thunder, our elders precede us, just as we will be the "thunder" that goes before our own children.

In the I Ching [the Book of Changes], Arousing Thunder speaks this truth: when a person has learned within his heart what fear and trembling mean, he is safeguarded against any terror produced by outside influences. Let the thunder roll... the superior person remains composed and reverent in spirit... A profound inner seriousness from which all outer terrors glance off harmlessly. The superior person is always filled with reverence at the manifestation of the Divine. He sets his life in order and searches his heart, lest it harbor any secret opposition to Divine will. Thus, reverence is the foundation of true culture.
